EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK

We are located in the heart of Exmoor National Park. This area of outstanding national beauty was nicknamed "Little Switzerland" by the Victorians. Where Exmoor meets the coast, the cliffs and scenery are breathtakingly beautiful. Exmoor is full of hidden valleys and was the background for the Lorna Doone story.
Lynton is a convenient touring base for both Exmoor and other places of interest along this stretch of the North Devon coast.

The History Of The Lynton Cottage

The building was originally constructed in 1815, by William Sanford of Nynehead Court in Somerset. He was a very wealthy man and an influential politician of his time. He fell in love with the views and built the House to be his Country Residence. He then retired to it, later in life. Several parts of the building pre-date his arrival by at least another 100 years.

It remained a family residence for approximately 100 years. At this time, wars in Europe made it unsafe for the rich and powerful to travel to their usual European holiday destinations. Consequently they had to find somewhere closer to home. The scenery of Exmoor gave the area the name of "Little Switzerland" because of its likeness. The hosting of house parties at Lynton Cottage, to the wealthy and powerful, also established Lynton as "the place to be".

For the last one hundred years the building has been a Hotel. The stunning views continue to amaze and delight visitors, from the original Georgian era, through to todays visitors, who visit this spot from all over the world. The current owners, Bill & Cita, have been renovating the building over the last four years, and 2017 sees the completion of the project. The premises have been sympathetically converted to provide contemporary accommodation, whilst maintaining the period features and character of the building.

The conversion to ten Holiday Apartments and Villas with sea view, will allow the Accommodation to be open 12 months of the year. Following the changing Tourism trends towards quality self catering accommodation, the premises now boast spacious, renovated holiday Apartments & Villas for Lynton & Lynmouth.
