LYNTON COTTAGE HOTEL, WHERE EXMOOR MEETS THE SEA
The Lynton Cottage Hotel is idyllically positioned on North Devon's breathtaking coastline, close to the wild, untamed beauty of Exmoor and Lorna Doone Country. With its dramatic scenery, majestic animals and rare birds, it is a paradise for lovers of the countryside.
The entrance to the hotel is set directly on North Walk, part of the North Devon coastal path, where a breathtaking 15 minutes walk will lead you into the remarkable Valley of Rocks.
The valley, created during the Ice Age has spectacular weathered rock formations with names such as 'The Devil's Cheesering' and 'Ragged Jack'. The picturesque valley has its own population of wild goats.
Walking the paths through the Hotel's 3 acres of gardens will lead you into the pretty harbour village of Lynmouth some 600' below. Here you can wander through the quaint fishing cottages, craft shops and cafes or take a romantic walk along the beach. When you're ready to return to the comfort of your hotel you will no doubt be tempted to take the unique water-operated cliff railway dating back to 1890 which joins Lynmouth to its sister village of Lynton.
The spectacular views from Lynton Cottage Hotel owe as much to the Lyn Valley as they to do to the picturesque bay. In complete contrast, this steep-sided wooded valley follows the course of the East Lyn river to Watersmeet where a Victorian fishing lodge is now a National Trust run tea shop. Dramatic waterfalls and amazing autumn and spring colours provide a constantly changing vista.
Inland from Lynton and Lynmouth, there are numerous walking (or for the less energetic - driving) opportunities in the rugged scenery of the Exmoor National Park. The park has over 600 miles of marked footpaths. Exmoor is abundant with wildlife - ponies, sheep and majestic red deer graze the open moorland, as falcons, buzzards and the rare Merlin circle overhead.
